Family sessions don’t always go according to plan — and that’s exactly the point.

This combined family and maternity session at Honey Studio in Minneapolis had all the ingredients: soft light, a growing family and a toddler who fully knew what he wanted (and what he didn’t).

And honestly, that’s where the magic lives.

Letting kids lead the way

Toddlers don’t follow shot lists. They explore, they wander, they decide when they’re in and when they’re out. Instead of trying to control that, I lean into it.

During this session, we let him lead. When he wanted to move, we moved. When he wanted to play, we followed. And when he came back in for snuggles or a quick moment with his parents, we were ready.

That approach always leads to something better than perfectly posed photos or video — it leads to something real.

Capturing this season as it is

Adding maternity into the mix made the session even more meaningful. This is such a specific, fleeting season — growing a family while still fully in the rhythm of life with your first child.

There were quiet moments, playful ones and everything in between.
